ABOUT Roger Clemens

ABOUT Roger Clemens

During the past 134 years of Major League Baseball, Roger Clemens is considered to be the greatest right-handed power pitcher of all-time. His on-the-field achievements could fill an entire book, yet his off-the-field humanitarian efforts and charitable work over the years could fill volumes.

“The Rocket” was born in Ohio, raised in Texas and played college baseball for the University of Texas Longhorns before being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 1983. After only one year in the minor leagues, he made his major-league debut in 1984.

In 1986 Roger had a record of 24 wins and only 4 losses and helped the Red Sox to the American League pennant. He was awarded his first Cy Young Award and was also voted the American League's Most Valuable Player (MVP), an extremely rare double honor for a pitcher. Roger went on to win two additional Cy Young Awards (1987 and 1991) while playing with the Red Sox.

He left Boston to play with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1997 and won his fourth Cy Young Award for a season with more than 20 wins. In 1998 he won 20 games for the Blue Jays to earn his fifth (and his second consecutive) Cy Young Award.

Roger was traded to the New York Yankees in 1999 where he won his first World Series championship. While in Yankee pinstripes the next year in 2000, Roger won his second World Series ring.

Roger was back in top form in 2001 with the Yankees, earning 20 wins and an unprecedented sixth Cy Young Award. While pitching for the Yankees in 2003, Roger passed the 4,000-strikeout mark and picked up his 300th career win- two of baseball’s biggest milestones.

In 2004 he pitched for the Houston Astros, posting 18 wins and earning his seventh Cy Young Award (his first in the National League). After three seasons with the Astros, Roger returned to the Yankees in 2007.

On August 18 2007, Roger Clemens got his 1,000th strikeout as a New York Yankee. He is only the ninth player in major league history to record 1,000 or more strikeouts with two different teams.

After the 2007 season, Roger retired having won a career total of 354 games (9th most of all-time), struck out 4,672 batters (3rd most of all-time), and earned seven Cy Young awards (the most of all time).

The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players named Roger the 15th greatest player in the history of Major League Baseball. (Roger keeps good company with such other names as Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron.) Roger was also elected by the fans to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.

In October 2006, Clemens was named to Sports Illustrated's "all-time" team.

Roger is married to wife, Debbie. Together they have four sons: Koby, Kory, Kacy, and Kody and live in Houston, Texas. In 2005, Roger’s oldest son, Koby, was drafted at the age of 18 by the Houston Astros as a third baseman.

While many of us know about Roger’s legendary baseball career, few of us know the depths of his humanitarian efforts and charitable work off the field.

In 1992, Roger and Debbie Clemens established The Roger Clemens Foundation; an entity dedicated to helping children in order to ensure that funds raised by the Foundation through golf tournaments, silent auctions and other events, would be properly distributed to the charities and organizations that they have committed to support. The Foundation exists for the purpose of carrying on and supporting educational, charitable, literary, scientific and religious activities for children, with a special emphasis on underprivileged and at-risk children, and children with special needs.

Among the numerous organizations that The Roger Clemens Foundation has supported are: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Variety Clubs International, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Make A Wish Foundation, The Jimmy Fund, Sunshine Kids, Periwinkle Foundation, and the National Paralysis Foundation, Starlight Children's Fund of Canada.

The Foundation has also provided either ongoing or one-time support to a number of local organizations benefiting children in Texas and the Houston area: Spring Branch Education Foundation, Paws For A Cause, Initiatives For Children, Arbor House Preschool, St. Francis Episcopal School, Bunker Hill Elementary School, Memorial Drive Elementary School, Memorial High School, Spring Woods High School, Boys and Girls Clubs of Houston, the Texas Chapter of Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association (DEBRA), Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Support has also been provided through the years for numerous organizations in Boston, Toronto and New York.

There are many organizations that Roger has supported and continues to support since the Foundation's inception through donation of memorabilia for auction, and with gifts and personal appearances in hospitals and shelters. Among these in the Houston, Texas area are the Star of Hope Family & Children's Center, Texas Children's Hospital, and the Mission of Yahweh Women's and Children's Center. Roger and Debbie also donate their time by participating in special charity events. As you can tell by his appearance to help out Allies Inc., Roger’s extreme generosity is not just limited to Texas. Last year, Roger visited Iraq with Drew Carey to help support our troops and raise morale. This is but a few of a thousand examples of Roger giving his heart, his time and his funds to help others.

The Roger Clemens Foundation is the realization of a dream Roger had early in his career to help fulfill the needs, ease the suffering, and encourage and support children from all walks of life. In doing so, he and Debbie have been and continue to be able to give back to their community by sharing a portion of their success through the efforts of The Foundation.

When Allies Inc. contacted Roger to be our distinguished headliner, Roger, himself, personally called us back- not his agent, not his publicist and not his assistant- and enthusiastically agreed to be part of this magical night. The conversation about this event lasted over fifteen (15) minutes, with Roger offering many ways in which he could help the event. We were overwhelmed by his generosity and commitment to this fundraiser.

It is an honor to have this future Hall of Famer headline this event. We are extremely grateful for Roger taking time out of his very busy schedule, and traveling from Texas to little ole New Jersey to help out Allies Inc.

Though Roger will soon be enshrined forever in the hallowed halls of Cooperstown, he has already been enshrined in the Allies Inc. Hall of Fame and in the hearts of the thousands of people we serve. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank Roger and his appearance.
